Mixing classic blues, rock, grunge, funk, punk, and even elements of operatic metal, Algernon’s music pushes past the boundaries of genres. Their sound is unique, blended and jagged at the same time. Their emotionally charged and powerfully organic stage shows have elevated them as one of the hottest bands in the Ann Arbor/Detroit underground music scene.  Phil, lead guitarist and writer of most of the band’s music, describes the band as an “incubator, nurturing and recording the evolution of four talented young men, both as musicians and as people.”

Algernon was formed in 2006, and consists of founding members Phil Boos, guitarist, and Ted Weindorf, drums and percussion. Bassist, Roy Jackson joined in 2009, and Lead vocalist, Lee Renaud, in 2010. Their evolutionary journey has resulted in the perfect blend of talent and personalities. Their ability to create the perfect blend of artistic collaboration while maintaining their individuality brings a unique synthesis of styles to their music.  Algernon performs as a tight knit group, playing off one another’s strengths .  So what’s next for Algernon? A unanimous goal is an eventual world tour, but presently, they are focusing on upcoming shows around Southeast Michigan and finishing their new EP.  As they gain more recognition, they will continue to grow, maturing both as a band and as the very talented and focused individuals that they are.

Upon hearing the name Algernon, one is first reminded of Daniel Keyes book, “Flowers for Algernon”, and is tempted to ask the band members if there is a connection. But that is all forgotten as the first guitar chords begin to reverberate, and the drums add their intoxicating beat.
